Cultural Historic Expedition by Sea

For Curious Minds and History Enthusiasts

Join a scenic and knowledge-rich maritime journey on a cultural expedition, designed for those who love stories, reflection, and sailing in the wake of the past. You’ll sail in RIB boats through the beautiful coastal waters around the island of Als, while our passionate historians and storytellers bring to life myths, legends, and ancient finds that have shaped the region for thousands of years.

Along the way, you’ll gain insight into local Iron Age and Viking myths and seafaring traditions. We go ashore at key landing sites to explore impressive reconstructions of the Nydam Boat and the Viking ship Sebbe Als — with stories of remarkable warships once sacrificed in local bogs, such as the Hjortspring war canoe and the Nydam warship.

Here, history unfolds through a rich blend of archaeological knowledge and engaging storytelling by experienced guides. This expedition is perfect for seniors, history lovers, and curious groups seeking an experience full of depth, storytelling, and unforgettable views.

Join the expedition on a Wednesday in August.

Together, We Create the Cultural Expedition

Behind the Cultural Expedition are three dedicated expedition leaders: cultural communicator and concept developer Mia Lilliendahl Larsen, cultural historian and storyteller Casper Clemmensen, and sailing coordinator Martin Panum from Mai-Event. Together, they bring 1,000 years of maritime history to life in close collaboration with the three iconic ancient boat guilds: the Hjortspring Boat, the Nydam Boat, and the Viking ship Sebbe Als.

The cultural Expedition is made possible by strong local contributors and visionary supporters:
Sønderborg Vækstråd, Destination Sønderjylland, Sønderborg Kommune, Fabrikant Mads Clausen Fonden, LAG Sønderborg-Aabenraa and Erhverv & Grøn Vækst – Sønderborg Kommune, LINAK-Fonden, all of whom have provided valuable support and financial backing.
